Dad takes on year-long run

Marathon Man

A PENKETH father has hit the ground running with a 12-month challenge in aid of a charity that helped his little boy deal with a rare eye condition.

Kevin Miller, of Victoria Road, will be running 1,363.38 miles, the equivalent of 52 marathons in 52 weeks, after his son Hamish was diagnosed with cataracts. Hamish, who will be two next month, had successful surgery in June which removed the cataract in his left eye but he still has to wear a patch for four years.

Kevin, aged 33, an insurance underwriter in Manchester, said: “It’s a very rare thing for babies to have cataracts but the eye department at Alder Hey Hospital, in Liverpool, have been brilliant so we really want to thank them. “I wanted to do something big, a real challenge, that will hopefully raise a lot of money and awareness because people don’t realise 1.5 million children worldwide are born blind.”

Kevin hopes to raise more than £2,500 for children’s eyesight charity Vision4Children by completing half marathons and marathons across the country and in the weeks when there is not an official run, completing the distance around his home.

He added: “I’ve signed up for the Nottingham, Liverpool and Warrington half marathons already. I can’t wait to get started. I thought I would be nervous but I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve never done anything close to this kind of challenge before so whether my legs and feet will forgive me we’ll have to see!”

Kevin will be supported by his wife Karen, aged 34, on his final marathon this time next year which will stretch from their home in Penketh to Alder Hey.

He said: “‘Nuts’ is normally what most people call me when I tell them but Karen has been very supportive and we hope to raise as much as we possibly can.”
